More energy transparency through heat consumption acquisition at SAMSON AG

Competent, efficient and active: How heat monitoring projects with OPTENDA GmbH proceed, is shown by the launch of a heat consumption acquisition at SAMSON AG.

Im Zuge der ISO 50001-Zertifizierung führte die SAMSON AG introduced the Energy Monitor for continuous recording of power consumption. After the software proved its worth, it was decided to integrate the entire heat distribution of the Frankfurt site into the software.

Lack of transparency of heat demand
Based on a central steam transfer point from the supplier, SAMSON AG operates a site-wide distribution network to individual steam consumers such as paint shops, test benches or kitchens. Apart from the monthly billing from the supplier, there was no further knowledge about individual heating requirements. This also meant that potential efficiency and saving potentials were unknown.

Rapid project implementation
SAMSON commissioned OPTENDA GmbH (until April 2020 GILDEMEISTER energy efficiency) to implement the project and handed over overall responsibility for the project to the experts. Based on a feasibility study and a detailed survey of the installation situation of the heat measurement technology, a holistic measuring point plan with all necessary information for the further project steps was developed. In addition to concept development and engineering services, OPTENDA also provided the selection and control of the installation partners.

Commissioning in record time
Due to clearly defined interfaces as well as uniform data acquisition and processing from a single source, the implementation was realized in a very short time. Within four weeks, determining of required data, preliminary planning and project costing were managed. Only three months passed from signing the contract to commissioning. During ongoing production, a total of 54 heat meters for water and three steam measuring points were installed and integrated into the existing energy monitoring system.

The challenge of data communication
Data transmission was not power oriented but implemented with SAM-LAN, SAMSON's new wireless technology. The SAM-LAN wireless network uses a free ISM band with a transmission frequency of 869 MHz. All radio stations form a mesh network. This means they can independently establish connections amongst each other. If one station fails, another communication path can be used.

Advantages of radio network installation
One of the great advantages of radio technology is that no cables have to be laid to the individual measuring points. This noticeably reduced the installation effort in the project, especially as many of the heat distributions are located in the basement with no connectivity, whatsoever. Using test equipment, OPTENDA developed the necessary interfaces within a few weeks to integrate the data structure of the radio network. The subsequent integration of the measurement data succeeded smoothly during the project implementation phase. The next step is the integration of the compressed air supply into the monitoring.
