Large roof areas of industrial buildings, warehouses, supermarkets and other large structures often have wide, unshaded roof areas that are ideal for the installation of photovoltaic modules. When installing photovoltaic systems, it is important to consider the load-bearing capacity of the roof and the statics of the building. Possible shading, for example from surrounding buildings or trees, should also be avoided in order to maximise the efficiency of the solar modules.

Checklist for outline planning

In order to be able to create an initial rough plan for you, we need some more information in the next step. A detailed checklist for this will also be provided by our sales representative. The more information our planners already have at this point, the more detailed SENS can plan your system. The type of roof covering and any existing insulation as well as the location of the electrical connections are particularly important here. Once all the data is available, our experts can start planning. Of course we will accompany you in compiling the information.

Project design with cost breakdown

In the third step, the SENS experts draw up a project design that is individually tailored to your situation. The concept consists of a non-binding offer including cost breakdown, as well as first preliminary plans. Throughout the entire process it is important for us to remain in close contact with you. For this purpose, we provide you with a direct contact person from the sales team. This person will personally present the relevant design of the PV system to you in order to jointly agree on the optimum solution. You are also welcome to contact us at any time if you have any questions!

On-site appointment for an individual consulation

In order to be able to implement the PV system, in the next step we need an on-site appointment to clarify all technical issues. Are you in agreement with the presented solution, the costs and the commercial key data? Then the detailed planning can begin. Our experts will calculate the system statics, which must be approved in relation to the building before construction can begin. The following points are also clarified by our staff at this stage: a precise measurement of the roof, recording the electrical connection, identifying deposit and storage areas and clarifying if scaffolding is required.

This does not mean any additional work for you. You only need to provide access to the roof areas and the utility room for the electricity connections. We take care of everything else!

Detailed fine tuning incl. network compatibility check

Now we get down to the details! In order for you to be able to benefit from green electricity from your own production in the future, a network compatibility test is required when setting up a "decentralised feed-in unit", which must be submitted to the responsible network operator. Of course we provide the network compatibility test for our customers within the scope of our cooperation. From an effective inverter power of 135 kW upwards, the so-called system certification of your roof system is also mandatory. We coordinate your preferred partners for the marketing by a direct marketer of the surplus electricity fed into the grid (from 750 kWp) and the necessary technical requirements. Once we have all the information, the SENS team will prepare a binding offer for you.

The results of the preceding detailed planning are incorporated into the final offer within one week. Installation and set-up of the PV system

In line with the coordinated construction schedule, in the 7th step the construction of the solar installation can begin. For this purpose, we coordinate directly with the responsible persons at your company regarding delivery, start of installation, etc. In doing so, we pay particular attention not to disrupt your normal business operations during the construction phase. As a guideline for the approximate construction time of the generator field, you can use the following rule of thumb: per 200 kWp installed capacity, a construction period of approximately one week can be expected. The grid connection is then carried out in close coordination with you. You can also obtain detailed information on the current progress from your contact person or our site manager on site.

Acceptance and start-up of the energy solution

As soon as the installation of the roof system is finished, a complete functional test of the system is carried out. The acceptance test takes place together with a responsible person from your company, while the test results are documented by SENS. After the technical readiness for operation has been established, the initial start-up of the system generally takes place together with the acceptance test. In order to test the functionality, the installed generator must once have supplied power which is used outside the PV system.

Instruction in the operation of your PV system

The instruction in the operation of your new PV system is generally carried out by our solar experts together with the initial commissioning. Here, the functions of the essential components are shown to you, the operation of the entire system is explained and relevant operating states and resulting procedures are described. From this point on, nothing stands in the way of you producing green electricity directly on your roof!

There are a variety of subsidy opportunities for companies wishing to invest in rooftop PV systems. In many countries, including Germany, government authorities and environmental organisations offer financial incentives to encourage the installation of photovoltaic systems. These subsidies can take the form of direct grants, reduced tax rates or guaranteed feed-in tariffs for surplus electricity fed into the grid. Some programmes also offer favourable loans for the purchase and installation of rooftop PV systems.

FAQ on the topic of photovoltaic roof systems on industrial buildings

Is there a subsidy for PV systems?

In Germany, there are a number of subsidy programmes for PV systems from a size of 750 kWp. The "Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG)", for example, guarantees a fixed feed-in tariff for electricity that is fed into the public grid. Although the level of remuneration decreases with the size of the system, this is still an attractive incentive for companies wishing to invest in renewable energy. In addition, companies can benefit from the special tendering scheme for photovoltaic systems of 1,000 kWp or more. From 1,000 kWp, the PV system must be put out to tender by the Bundesnetzagentur and is guaranteed remuneration for 20 years. In this tendering process, awards are made to the most favourable bids, which can provide additional financial support. Find out which regulations apply to you and what support is possible.

Can the energy generated be fed into the grid?

Yes, the energy generated by rooftop PV systems can be fed into the grid. The surplus electricity is fed into the public grid and reimbursed by the electricity supplier. The amount of compensation can vary depending on the country and specific feed-in tariffs. In Germany, for example, the "Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG)" guarantees a fixed payment for the electricity fed into the grid; alternatively, a power purchase agreement (PPA) can be concluded. This option of feeding electricity into the grid opens up an additional source of income for companies and makes rooftop PV systems an even more worthwhile investment.

What is a PPA?

A power purchase agreement (PPA) is a financial agreement in which a company that operates a rooftop PV system sells the electricity it produces directly to a buyer. These are often energy suppliers or large industrial companies. The PPA usually specifies the price at which the electricity is sold, as well as the terms and duration of the contract, which is often ten to twenty years. This provides the PV system operator with a secure and predictable source of income and the electricity consumer with long-term security of supply at stable prices. Is my roof surface suitable for photovoltaics?

There are various types of roofs that are suitable for the installation of PV roof systems. A flat roof is particularly suitable as it generally offers sufficient shade-free area and allows the installation of solar modules. Flat roof types such as foil roofs, green roofs and trapezoidal sheet metal roofs are often used for the installation of PV systems. However, it is important to note that not all roof types or materials are suitable for PV systems and it is therefore advisable to consult a specialist consultant before installation.
